Arginine Amino Acid

What is it?

Arginine L – commonly referred to as L- Arginine is a nonessential amino acid.

Amino acids are the chemical units that make up proteins, as they are famously called the "building blocks" of protein.

The term "nonessential" amino acid does not mean that arginine is not necessary -- it means that the body can manufacture it on its own as needed and, as such, it does not need to be obtained from food sources.

How can it benefit you?

The body uses arginine to manufacture a compound called nitric oxide. It's only been recently that researchers discovered the importance of nitric oxide for relaxing blood vessels and allowing the blood to flow more freely to and from the heart. As such, L-Arginine may be helpful in a number of cardiovascular conditions including atherosclerosis, hypertension, congestive heart failure, and angina pectoris. It may also be helpful for intermittent claudication and male infertility (caused by circulation problems.)

There is preliminary evidence that arginine L (L- Arginine) may be able to improve sexual health for some men by increasing blood flow to the penis, which may result in harder erections.

Arginine L (L- Arginine) also plays an important role in wound healing, immune functions, detoxification reactions, and promoting the secretion of key hormones such as insulin and growth hormone.

Precautions

Some experts believe that people who suffer from viral infections like herpes should not take arginine supplements, and they should also avoid foods rich in arginine and low in amino acid lysine. These foods appear to promote the growth of certain viruses.

Pregnant and nursing women should avoid the use of arginine supplements.

In addition, people who suffer from health conditions or are on any prescribed medications should also consult a physician before taking any supplements, especially those who suffer from schizophrenia.

Long term use is not advised, especially at high doses as it may affect the balances and functions of other amino acids.

In addition, although side effects are uncommon at appropriate dosages, possible side effects may include nausea, vomiting, flushing of the skin, and headaches.

Arginine should not be used in dosages above 20 g daily.
