Studies done in the 1990's demonstrated that these compounds, known as proanthocyandins, prevent invading bacteria (primarily E coli) from adhering to the bladder wall where they would normally reproduce, thus flushing the potential troublemakers out of the body and, therefore, reducing the likelihood of infection.

A number of controlled studies confirm that consuming large amounts of cranberry juice, or taking the fruit in a concentrated pill form, reduces the incidence of urinary tract infections among susceptible women.

Put simply, since this process is believed to be part of what can cause heart disease, prevention of oxidation through the use of cranberry supplements may reduce the risk of heart disease.

3. Anti-Cancer - Preliminary research revealed that the compounds in cranberries may have anti-cancer properties that may prove to be a potent cancer fighter.

4. Kidney Stones - There are scant reports indicating that cranberry juice may help reduce the risk of kidney stones. However, these reports are anecdotal.

Forms and Usual Dosage

The benefits of cranberries can be found in several forms which include: cranberry juice, cranberry pill (cranberry capsule), and cranberry tincture.

The normal dosage during clinical studies to treat urinary tract infections calls for taking one 400 mg capsule of concentrated cranberry juice extract two times per day. In a juice form – drink two eight-ounce glasses of undiluted high-quality unsweetened cranberry juice each day. If using cranberry tincture 1/2 to 1 teaspoon should be taken three times per day.
