Health Benefits of Green Tea Extract

What is Green Tea Extract?

Green tea extract comes from tea leaves of the tea plant called Camellia sinensis. In fact, researchers found that epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) is over 200 times more powerful as an antioxidant than the almighty vitamin E in neutralizing free radicals, which are highly reactive chemical substances that can damage cellular material, such as the body's DNA, leading to premature aging and many different diseases if not tightly controlled. It is also more potent than vitamin C.

It's important to note that diseases such as cancer, heart disease, and many other chronic conditions are linked to the damage caused by free radicals. Therefore, any antioxidant that can help prevent this free radical damage can help guard the body against these diseases.

Animal studies suggest that green tea prevents platelet clumping and, as such, may reduce the risk of heart attacks and strokes. Platelet clumping can contribute to atherosclerosis, which is the build up of fat plague around the arterial walls that can clog arteries. Green tea also appears to lower blood pressure.

Now, let's take a look at the benefits of green tea extract in regards to cancer prevention.

In general, it's been found that in populations where people are green tea drinkers, like Japan for example, have a lower incidence of cancer than those populations that drink other types of tea or none at all. In fact, laboratory and animal studies back up those cancer protection findings, showing the catechins in green tea inhibit tumors. In addition, a group of Swedish recently discovered that the superstar antioxidant, EGCG, may help prevent cancer by stopping the development of new blood vessels that promote growth.

Research suggests that green tea appears to target some specific cancers. More specifically, researchers say that the benefits of green tea may help protect against breast, prostate, esophagus, lung, skin, stomach, colon, ovarian, liver, and bladder cancers.

Tooth Decay - Some experts claim that green tea contains a large amount of the cavity fighter, fluoride, which can help prevent tooth decay.

Weight loss Aid – Swiss researchers have preliminary evidence that green tea accelerates the burning of fat calories in individuals who are overweight. A small but interesting study published in the in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, Vol. 70, No. 6, 1040-1045, December 1999 found that "Green tea has thermogenic properties and promotes fat oxidation beyond that explained by its caffeine content per se. The green tea extract may play a role in the control of body composition via sympathetic activation of thermogenesis, fat oxidation, or both."

But wait, there's even more intriguing possibilities on the health benefits of green tea extract.

Diabetes- According to a few animal studies green tea holds promise as a remedy for diabetes. More specifically, green tea may help regulate glucose in the body.

Granted, many of the medicinal claims made for green tea have not been examined outside a laboratory setting, specifically in clinical trials to assess the plant's health effects in people However, these research findings are exciting. Precautions

There are no known side effects of green tea. However, green tea may cause insomnia and nervousness due to the caffeine content, which is roughly half of coffee.

In addition, people who are on prescription medications should always consult a physician before taking any dietary supplements including green tea. Green tea contains vitamin K that interferes with blood thinners and, as such, it is advised that you should not use green tea medicinally.

Lastly, if you are taking ginseng regularly you should not drink green tea as it may reduce the effectiveness of ginseng.
