Experts for so long have expressed the health benefits of drinking lots of water and, as such, this question at a first glance may sound a bit unusual.

However, for endurance athletes, infants, and individuals with certain health challenges this indeed may be a question of concern.


Can You Drink Too Much Water?

The answer to this question is YES. The condition is called water intoxication or hyponatremia (low blood sodium).


Information for Athletes

Can You Drink Too Much Water? Answer: Yes

Athletes who engage in extreme events such as triathlons, marathons, and long distance endurance bicycling may drink excessive amounts of water in trying to avoid dehydration. In doing so, they can deplete their blood sodium levels so much that it can cause water intoxication.

Activities that are this intense causes the body to sweat profusely, which means the body is not only losing water but also sodium (salt) and other electrolytes that help body muscles and organs to function properly.

However, as we mentioned earlier, drinking excessive amounts of water rapidly can lower sodium levels in the blood and if the normal balance of electrolytes is pushed outside of its safe limits, it could cause a potentially fatal disturbance in brain function.

Symptoms include nausea, vomiting, weakness, fatigue, and in severe cases; seizures, coma and death.

Prevention Tips of Water Intoxication for Athletes

  • Athletes should understand his or hers individual fluid needs
  • Determine the rate of sweat loss weeks before a race by using the USA Track and Field Self-Testing Program for Optimal Hydration
  • Eat salty foods and snacks before and during competition events
  • Drink sport drinks that contain sodium during long distance events (1 gram of sodium per hour of high intensity exercise)
  • Weigh yourself before and after training. If you gained weight you probably drank too much
  • Avoid the use of ibuprofen, aspirin, and other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agents pre race and during race day

    Please keep in mind that our bodies are different and everyone responds differently to exercise, so fluid and sodium needs will vary.

    Information for Parents: Infants

    Can You Drink Too Much Water? Answer: Yes

    An infant may be at risk of water intoxication if they consume several bottles of water a day or if they drink infant formula that has been diluted too much. Water intoxication in infants occurs when sodium in the blood become too diluted. Parents are advised not to dilute infant formula unless instructed by a physician.

    Symptoms of water intoxication in infants include seizures, pale-colored urine, excessive number of wet diapers –more than 6-8 per day, sleeping more than usual, and being difficult to wake up. Experts say that infants get all the water they need in breast milk or formula.

    Health Challenges

    Individuals with certain health challenges are more at risk of water intoxication. These include; chronic illness, malnutrition, people that retain water, kidney diseases, certain mental disorders, alcoholism, and the elderly. Diagnosis and treatment must be done by a physician. However, some symptoms of over-hydration include:

  • Change in behavior- confusion, drowsiness, inattentive
  • Shouting and Delirium (mental confusion that develops quickly and fluctuates in intensity)
  • Blurred vision
  • Muscle cramps
  • Twitching
  • Paralysis- One side of the body
  • Poor coordination
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Rapid breathing
  • Sudden weight gain
  • Weakness
  • Blood Pressure is sometimes higher than normal

    While most Americans have quite the opposite problem, not drinking enough water, the aforementioned individuals must be mindful of their water consumption.

    Bottom line…you can drink too much water. However, experts say it's an uncommon condition, unless you're a marathon runner or an infant.
