Carpal tunnel syndrome is a condition that did not become widely known until the domination of personal computers came flooding into the workplace back in the 1980's.

Sometimes women develop CTS as a result of the edema of pregnancy. As such, this condition tends to clear up once the "little one" arrives and the excess fluid of pregnancy disappears.

Carpal tunnel syndrome symptoms can range from faint tingling and mild numbness to disabling excruciating pain.

The most common symptoms experienced by CTS sufferers include tingling, burning, or numbness in the thumb and the first three fingers along with weakness in the hands and fingers.

CTS symptoms also include cramping of the hand as well as sharp shooting pains in the forearms and, in severe cases, to the shoulder.

The pain is worse at night and in the early morning and can affect one or both hands.

In addition, the CTS sufferer may find it difficult to pick up or hold on to small objects or even clench their fist.

This condition often begins with numbness and tingling and then it progresses to other symptoms.

1. Cut out or try to avoid excessive intake of salt and foods containing sodium as it can further aggravate symptoms by promoting water retention.

2. Try increasing your intake of vitamin B6 foods since there is evidence that a deficiency in this vitamin may play a part in the development of carpal tunnel syndrome.

Vitamin B6 foods include: bananas, avocados, potatoes, nuts, sweet potato, chicken, whole grains, bluefin tuna and Atlantic salmon.

3. Cut out caffeine and smoking as it constricts blood vessels and aggravates this condition by reducing blood flow to the hands.

Bromelain is an enzyme found in pineapple that has shown to ease the pain and reduce the swelling. You can choose to eat fresh pineapples or simply take a bromelain supplement.
