Constipation Infant Remedy ...

Many infants experience constipation which is said to be common as well as an easily treatable problem.

But, before we delve into our topic of this page, which is constipation infant remedy or remedies, let's briefly discuss what it is and what are some of the possible causes of infant constipation.

What is Infant Constipation?

Constipation is described as bowel movements that are hard and dry, difficult or painful to pass, and less frequent than normal. It is the result of waste passing through the large intestine too slowly.

What Causes Infant Constipation?

Some of the causes of infant constipation include:

  • Not getting enough fluids
  • Baby formula may not be mixed correctly
  • Switching from breast milk to formula
  • The introduction to solid foods
  • Metabolic disorders
  • Type of formula
  • Cow's milk

In addition, breast-fed infants have more bowel movements than infants that are formula-fed.

It is normal for a baby to strain, grunt, or even get red in the face while having a bowel movement. However, if your baby is crying while he or she is straining this could be a sign of constipation.

It's important to note that true constipation occurs when the baby's stools cause significant difficulty and discomfort when being passed because they are very dense and hard.

If the baby has not yet had solid foods this could be a sign of a different heath problem. Therefore, it's important to take your baby to your pediatrician to get the condition checked. Moreover, this could also apply to babies that are on solid foods as well.

In fact, younger infants and newborns with constipation should be carefully evaluated by their pediatrician.

    Constipation Infant Remedy: Dietary

Treatment depends on the child's age and the severity of the problem. However, we have listed a few recommendations from medical experts.

If the infant is 0-2 months of age it is recommended that you call your baby's pediatrician for advice.

If your infant is 2+ months of age giving your baby 2-4 ounces of water twice a day is recommended. If your baby's constipation doesn't improve, it's time to try fruit juices. These would include grape, pear, apple, cherry, or prune. Administer: 2- 4 ounces – twice a day.

Infants at 4+ months of age that is already on solid foods should be given high fiber baby foods twice a day until constipation improves. Baby foods that are high in fiber are peas, beans, apricots, prunes, peaches, pears, plums or spinach. These foods help to make stools softer.

Bananas, rice cereal and applesauce all tend to produce firmer stools. Carrots and squash are said to be constipating for some babies.

Another recommendation is ½ teaspoon of unprocessed bran mixed with food twice a day.

Some physicians recommend 1 tsp of light Karo syrup mixed with 4 oz of water, but check with your physician before administering Karo syrup.

In addition, you may also put a small amount of water-based lubricant around your baby’s anus to help ease the passage of hard stools.

Constipation Infant Remedy: Beyond Dietary Recommendations

A tummy massage may also help relax your baby and may cause him or her to have a bowel movement. Gently massage and rub your baby's tummy in a clockwise direction. Should this action stir up discomfort for your baby, discontinue this recommendation.

Some medical professionals suggest giving your constipated baby a warm bath to help them relax and, as such, this could get stools "rolling" again.

Another infant constipation home remedy is bicycle legs. Place your baby on hers or his back and hold hers or his legs in a half-bent position. Gently begin to move your baby's legs as if she is riding a bicycle. You can alternate "Bicycle Legs" with the "Tummy Massage."

It is NOT recommended that you give your infant laxatives or enemas unless you consult a physician.
