In addition, people with asthma or atopy (a genetic tendency toward allergic reactions) may be more prone to have an echinacea allergic reaction when taking this herb.

It's extremely important that you seek immediate medical attention should you have an allergic reaction to this herb. Symptoms of an echinacea allergic reaction include rash, itching, swelling, dizziness, throat swelling, and trouble breathing. Echinacea and Pregnancy

Women who are trying to conceive should probably avoid this herb. Echinacea harbors a substance in the most commonly used echinacea plant species that may interfere with the release of unfertilized eggs into the fallopian tubes. Therefore, it may decrease fertility in women.

Indeed, echinacea and pregnancy is an area of concern among women. As with many herbs, the safety use of echinacea during pregnancy and the effects on the developing fetus are unknown and, therefore, it is not recommended.

Even though new evidence looks very positive, more clinical studies are needed to ensure its safety during pregnancy. As such, it is advised that if you are pregnant or nursing not to use this herb.

Echinacea Precautions

Some experts point out that echinacea should not be taken for longer than eight weeks.

Why?

This is because they believe its immune-enhancing effects decrease. Therefore, to be most effective they recommend that it be stopped for a week then resumed.

Echinacea should not be given to children under the age of two, and it should only be given to children over two in consultation with a physician.

You may experience echinacea side effects if you have an autoimmune disorder such as lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, and MS as well as TB or HIV/AIDS. People who have these conditions are advised not to take echinacea.

In fact, anyone with a health condition or are on any prescribed medications should always speak to a physician before starting any type of supplements.

Lastly, this herb should be immediately avoided before, during, and after an organ transplant or by anyone taking drugs to purposely suppress the immune system such as cyclosporine.
