Holistic Home Care for Gum Disease

Before we delve into holistic home care for gum disease, let's briefly define what it is……

What is it?

Gum disease is also known as gingivitis and periodontitis. Gingivitis (gum inflammation) is caused by plague – sticky deposits of bacteria and food debris, which coats the surfaces of teeth. As such, it is the accumulation of plague that causes the gums to become infected and swollen. Eventually, plague hardens to form tartar, a hard mineral shell that irritates and erodes healthy gum tissue.

If gingivitis is left untreated, it can lead to a real serious dental problem called periodontitis (advanced stage) in which the bone supporting the teeth begins to erode as result of the infection. In fact, periodontal disease is the leading cause of tooth loss in adults. However, it's important to note that gingivitis is the early stage of periodontal disease and, as such, a professional cleaning can reverse gingivitis.

Therefore, the first step is a careful evaluation from a dentist or periodontist to determine the cause and the extent of gum disease and follow their treatment plan. In addition, there is holistic home care for gum disease approaches that can help, including herbs and supplements.

Dietary & Lifestyle

Avoid eating sugar, including all refined carbohydrates because sugar promotes plague buildup and inhibits white blood cell function to fight off bacteria.

Consume a varied diet of fresh fruits, vegetables, (especially green leafy vegetables), meat, legumes, high fiber foods, and whole grains to provide the body with vitamins and minerals needed for dental health. In addition, it provides the teeth and gums with exercise that is needed.

While all vitamins and minerals are essential for continued teeth health, it's vital that you're getting enough of vitamin C. Vitamin C is particularly important for the prevention of gingivitis and periodontitis. However, vitamin A is also important since a lack of it often results to gum infection.

Sodium, potassium, calcium, phosphorus, iron, and magnesium are all minerals that are especially important to teeth health as well.

Supplements that may be Helpful

Vitamin A - Vitamin A promotes healing of gum tissues.

Vitamin C with bioflavonoids – Bleeding and swollen gums may be a sign of a vitamin C deficiency. Vitamin C is necessary for the production of collagen, the connective tissue found in teeth and bones. It promotes healing, especially of bleeding gums. Bioflavonoids are antioxidants that strengthen blood vessels walls that supplies gum tissue with oxygen.

Vitamin E - Vitamin E helps the healing of gum tissues. In fact, for inflamed gums you may want to open a capsule of vitamin E and rub the oil on your gums. It is said to be very healing and helps alleviate soreness.

Calcium - Calcium is needed for the formation and maintenance of healthy teeth. It also helps to prevent bone loss around the gums. Magnesium is needed because it works with calcium.

Zinc - Zinc enhances immune system function and promotes wound healing. Copper is needed to balance with zinc.

Coenzyme 10 - Coenzyme 10 is a powerful antioxidant that helps reduce swelling and promotes healing. In addition, it may improve gum tissue repair.

Quercetin - Quercetin harbors anti-inflammatory properties.

Folic Acid - Folic acid liquid (mouthwash) has been shown to reduce plaque and bleeding in periodontal disease. In addition, it reduces inflammation.

Multivitamin and mineral supplement - Some experts have also recommended taking a comprehensive multivitamin and mineral supplement. We believe it's an excellent recommendation because Americans struggle daily trying to consume the daily recommended allowances of fruits and vegetables.

It's important to see a healthcare professional for therapeutic dosages of any type of supplements because mixing and matching supplements on your own can be very dangerous to your health.

Holistic home care for gum disease herbs that may be helpful are as follows.

According to the well-renowned tome "Prescription of Nutritional Healing" written by Phyllis A. Balch, CNC who states:

"Applying aloe vera gel directly to inflamed gums eases discomfort and soothes the tissues.

Clove oil is good for temporary relief of tooth and/or gum pain. Simply rub a drop or two of clove oil on the affected area. If the oil is too strong in its pure form, it can be diluted with a drop or two of olive oil.

Strained chamomile tea and calendula flower tea are both soothing and help to heal gum tissues.

Echinacea, hawthorn berries, myrrh gum, and rose hips help to keep down inflammation and enhance immune function. You can apply these herbs directly to the inflamed areas as a poultice or drink them in tea form.

Sage is good for its anti-inflammatory properties. Boil 2 tablespoons of dried, crushed sage leaves in one cup of water, steep for twenty minutes, strain, and rinse your month several times a day.

Thyme is a natural antiseptic that reduces the level of bacteria in the mouth.

Goldenseal destroys the bacteria that cause periodontal disease. Take 3,000 milligrams daily. Or place a dropperful of alcohol-free goldenseal extract in your mouth, swish it around for three minutes, then swallow. For inflamed gums, place 5 drops of alcohol-free goldenseal extract on a piece of gauze or pure cotton and place this on the inflamed area. Do this immediately whenever mouth sores or inflammation starts, and you will be amazed at the results. In severe cases, it may take three to five nights for sores to heal. Be sure to pack the gauze or cotton tightly up under the inside of the front of the mouth between the lips and gum.

Caution: Do not take goldenseal internally on a daily basis for more than one week at a time, as it may disturb normal intestinal flora. Do not use it during pregnancy, and use it with caution if you are allergic to ragweed." (pg. 565)
