Water protects our joints, muscles, organs, and other vital tissues. It helps dissolve minerals and other nutrients to make them accessible to the body, and it prevents constipation.

To maintain wellness and to avoid dehydration, our bodies need an on going water supply to replace water loss through urination, sweating, and respiration.

On the average, the human body is made up of about 50 to 75 percent water, which calculates to about 10 to 12 gallons of water. Therefore, you need a lot of water to stay healthy and to flush out toxins.

Adults on average, lose about 2 1/2 quarts of water daily through perspiration, urination, bowel movements, sitting, and even breathing. On hot humid days, or days that strenuous physical activity occurs the loss of fluids may be much greater.

It is very difficult to provide you with an exact formula on how much water to drink daily because it depends on may different factors. Body weight, height, biochemistry, age, gender, and lifestyle are a few of these factors when deciding on how much water to drink daily. We found while doing our research on daily requirements of water intake, the answer to this question was unclear.

Some experts say let thirst be your guide, while other experts say men should consume 12-13 cups daily and women 8-9 cups daily. Other guidelines we encountered in our research were to follow the "8x8 rule." Drink eight-8 ounce glasses of water a day, or take your body weight in pounds and divide that number in half. That will give you the ounces of water you should drink per day. So if you weighed 140 pounds you would drink 70 ounces of water daily.

Our Recommendations

We recommend 8-12 cups daily. Pregnant women and women that are breast-feeding should consult with their physician on daily water consumption.

Consider some of your water intake daily will come from fruits, vegetables, milk, soup, and other daily food intake. Roughly 20%.

Illnesses- Fever, diarrhea, and vomiting all cause water loss. Follow the advice of your physician and increase fluids to prevent dehydration.

Diet- High fiber diets may require additional water to process foods and avoid constipation.

Urine- Check your urine. If your urine is dark yellow, has a strong odor, or if you're going to the bathroom less than 4x a day, you probably need to increase your water intake.

Alcohol and Caffeine- Alcohol and caffeine act like diuretics, causing the body to lose water through increased urination. Therefore, you will need to increase your water intake.
