All about menopause weight gain ...

If you're a women that's been plagued with menopause weight gain you are definitely not alone. Many women in their 40s and 50s notice a few extra pounds around the tummy, rather than their hips and thighs and voice their concerns with their physicians.

Indeed, this blows a women's pear shaped figure not to mention the unwanted pounds in unwanted places. In fact, it is not uncommon for some women to experience weight gain anywhere from ten to fifteen pounds during this natural biological process called menopause or perimenopause – years leading to menopause.

So, what causes menopause weight gain?

The association between weight gain in midlife and later life and menopause remains unclear. However, there are probably many different factors that can cause weight gain during menopause such as:

Aging - Aging facilitates weight gain as your metabolic rate decreases.

Hormonal shifts- Hormonal shifts, particularly in estrogen levels, during perimenopause are thought to contribute to weight gain.

Less exercise - Decreased physical activity is related to weight gain and women in menopause tend to exercise less than others.

Slowing metabolism – As metabolism slows down the number of calories you need for energy decreases along with the amount of muscles you have. As such, muscles burn more calories than fat, therefore, the less muscles you have the fewer calories are burned.

Increase food intake - An increase in food intake means you'll consume more calories, which are converted to fat if you don't burn them for energy.

Genetics – Genetic factors may play a role in weight gain. Therefore, it is possible if your parents struggled with extra weight around their abdomen, you may be prone to gaining weight around your tummy as well.

Decrease thyroid function - Another possible cause for menopause weight gain is a decrease in thyroid function.

How to Fight the Battle of the Bulge and/or Menopause Weight Gain

Many women have turned to diet pills as a means to shed pounds and regain their shapely figure. Although many fat burners and weight loss pills do show promise, we do not recommend that you take them without first speaking with a physician.

Why?

Because many diet pills contain substances that may exacerbate some of the disturbing symptoms of menopause. Yes, the very ones that you're probably trying to alleviate.

One of these substances is caffeine or caffeine based stimulants, which can trigger hot flashes, night sweats, nervousness, insomnia, and others. If you look at the labels you will often see them listed as guarana, citrus aurantium (aka bitter orange), green tea extract, yerba mate, kolanut, and more. These all contain caffeine or caffeine-like substances that expert's are recommending that you avoid due to its power to worsen menopause symptoms.

Lastly, there really isn't any "menopause weight-loss supplements" per se. There are weight-loss supplements in general.

Bottom line – this is why we do not recommend diet pills for menopause weight gain.

Unfortunately, there is no magic formula for avoiding weight gain as we age, but we highly recommend the following:

  • Eat a healthy diet that is low in fat and high in fruits and vegetables

  • Increase your physical activity

  • Reduce your calorie intake by about 200 calories a day to maintain your weight as you get into your mid- to late 40s.
