MSM Information …

What is it?

MSM (methysulfonylmethane) is a naturally organic sulfur compound and a metabolite of dimethylsulfoxide DMSO, a well known compound for alleviating pain and inflammation, but had a rather strong and disagreeable odor. In addition, DMSO caused toxic effects in some people. MSM is thought to have many of DMSO's advantages, but without the strong sulfur odor or toxicity.

DMSO has been approved by the FDA as a prescription drug for only one use -- for the treatment of interstitial cystitis, which is a painful bladder condition.

As the name implies, MSM is a source of the mineral sulfur, which is the fourth most abundant mineral in the human body. Sulfur is an essential mineral that is a necessary building block for proteins, especially those found in the hair, muscles, and connective tissue of the joints and skin.

MSM is found in minute amounts in everyone's blood and in most foods. However, it is quickly destroyed when foods are processed, including drying or heating. Therefore, if your diet consists of considerable amounts of processed food, MSM is normally either present in very small amounts or not present at all. As such, taking a MSM nutritional supplement can provide you with this important mineral for optimum good health.

How Can A MSM Nutritional Supplement Benefit You?

Like DMSO, MSM is said to alleviate arthritis pain, but without the strong and disagreeable odor. In addition, its proponents claim it is effective in treating lupus, muscle pain, fibromyalgia, carpal tunnel syndrome, allergies, headaches, and a wide variety of other aliments.

However, in regards to evidence of efficacy, most of the evidence that MSM works is more word of mouth, meaning individuals' success stories and the experiences of two chief proponents of MSM - Dr. Stanley Jacob and Dr. Ronald Lawrence.

In fact, most of the research done on MSM has been done by Stanley W. Jacob, MD., of Oregon Health Sciences University and Ronald Lawrence, MD., Ph.D., of the UCLA School of Medicine. Both of them have treated thousands of people with painful conditions with DMSO and MSM. In their book, The Miracle of MSM, they report MSM information on its numerous health benefits, including:

  • Pain relief
  • Reduction of muscle spasms
  • Reduction of inflammation
  • Increase in blood flow
  • Softening of scar tissue
  • Control of overactive nerve impulses

Again, keep in mind that more scientific studies are needed to substantiate the aforementioned therapeutic claimed benefits. On the other hand, a couple clinical studies found MSM to be effective in relieving arthritis pain. In short, MSM appears to harbor analgesic (pain-killing) and anti-inflammatory properties.

It's important to understand that taking a MSM nutritional supplement is NOT a cure for any health condition mentioned, but we believe MSM is definitely worth checking out.

    MSM nutritional supplement safety……..

MSM appears to be safe and according to our research, it seems to harbor no serious side effects. However, long-term effects are not presently known.

There have been some reports of minor gastrointestinal discomfort such as stomach upset, cramping, or diarrhea.

Overdosage can result to MSM side effects such as headaches as well as nausea and diarrhea.

MSM can have a mild blood-thinning effect. Therefore, if you are on a blood thinner (anticoagulant), such as aspirin or warfarin (Coumadin), consult with your doctor before taking MSM supplements.

It's important that you speak with your physician before taking any dietary supplements, especially if you are on any prescription medications or have a heath condition.

Pregnant and nursing women should not take MSM supplements as the effects of MSM during pregnancy and lactation have not been sufficiently evaluated.

A Tip on Choosing an MSM Nutritional Supplement

Select a MSM nutritional supplement produced at pharmaceutical standard registered facilities. It is important to note that dietary supplements are not highly regulated by the FDA in the U.S. and, as such, manufacturers are self policed and do not have to guarantee the safety, effectiveness, or even the true content of their products.

In fact, consumers only have a 1 in 5 chance of buying a product that contains what is stated on the label or one that does not harbor contaminates. GMP compliant manufactures comply with stringent regulatory standards, which ensures the product contains what is stated on the label.
