SAM-e Information on Arthritis
SAM-e Pros and Cons
Welcome to our SAM-e Arthritis webpage.
SAM-e is the abbreviation for S-adenosylmethionine and is actually pronounced as "Sammy."
What is it? SAM-e is a derivative of the essential amino acid methionine that is formed in the body naturally when methionine combines with adenosine triphosphate (ATP), an energy producing compound that is also the major source of cellular energy.
SAMe is found in all human cells and is involved in dozens of essential biochemical reactions, including cell maintenance and nerve function. However, it's important to note that both folic acid and vitamin B12 are required for the synthesis of SAM-e, as well as methionine. In addition, some experts point out that levels of SAMe tend to decline with age.
As a supplement, SAM-e is worthy of attention. It is used in connection with a variety of conditions including osteoarthritis, depression, fibromyalgia, and certain liver disorders.
Since the topic of this page is about SAM-e and Arthritis, the following information will be addressing the benefits of SAMe in connection with this condition. However, if you are interested in learning more about SAMe and depression, please click here:

SAM-e Arthritis – How can it Benefit You?
What are the pros of using SAM-e?
SAM-e Arthritis ... SAM-e Pros and Cons ...
SAM-e does come with both pros and cons, therefore, we will start with the pros and end with the cons.
How can SAM-e benefit Arthritis/ Osteoarthritis? There is evidence that SAM-e promotes repair and regrowth of damaged cartilage, making it especially valuable for osteoarthritis treatment. In addition, it may help preserve the gel-like, shock-absorbing cartilage, which is also of value because it wears away in people with arthritis.
Moreover, just like a deficiency of glucosamine, a deficiency of SAMe in the joint tissue leads to loss of the gel-like nature and shock absorbing qualities of cartilage and, as such, osteoarthritis can develop.
Is Sam-e an effective supplement for Arthritis/ Osteoarthritis? It appears to be extremely effective. According to the well-renowned tome The Natural Physician's Healing Therapies, written by Mark Stengler, N.D. who states:
"Needless to say, when something works, I stay with it – and I'm now a pretty strong advocate of SAMe for both depression and osteoarthritis." (Page 397)
In fact, SAM-e is approved by health authorities in Germany as a first-choice prescription drug to treat osteoarthritis.
Keep in mind that in many European countries, SAM-e is a prescription medication. However, in the United States it's available as a nonprescription nutritional supplement.
SAM-e Arthritis Evidence of Efficacy
Is there any evidence of efficacy?
There are numerous studies in regards to SAM-e and osteoarthritis showing impressive results. For example, here is a very impressive one:
According to Mark Stengler, N.D., in his extensive tome titled The Natural Physician's Healing Therapies:
SAM-e Arthritis…. "In the largest study on SAM-e and osteoarthritis, researchers followed the progress of 20,641 people who took SAMe for eight weeks. Patients took 400 milligrams three times a daily for the first week, 400 milligrams twice daily for the second week, and 200 milligrams twice daily during the third to eighth weeks. Seventy-one percent of SAM-e users reported "good" or "very good" benefits, while only 9 percent reported poor outcomes." (page 401-402)
SAMe has also been studied in thousands of patients and in these studies osteoarthritis sufferers have demonstrated that SAMe can be as effective at increasing joint mobility and reducing swelling and pain as such NSAIDs (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatories) as ibuprofen and aspirin.
What are the cons of using SAM-e?
Before we move on to the cons of SAM-e, we have one last noteworthy comment about the pros. SAM-e seems to be very safe, with no significantly adverse side effects reported in the literature. Now, with that being said, let's move on to SAM-e cons.
SAM-e is not recommended for people with bipolar disorder depression.
A small number of people have experienced side effects such as nausea and gastrointestinal disturbances as result of taking high doses. However, some experts point out taking enteric-coated tablets should help alleviate heartburn.
Individuals on prescription medications should speak with a physician before taking SAM-e supplements for possible drug interactions.
Individuals with health conditions should speak with a physician before taking SAM-e supplements.
Pregnant or nursing women should always consult a physician before taking any type of supplements.
Tips on Choosing a SAM-e Supplement
1. Select a supplement produced at pharmaceutical GMP compliant facilities. It is important to note that dietary supplements are not highly regulated by the FDA in the U.S. and, as such, manufacturers do not have to guarantee the safety, effectiveness, or even the true content of their products.
In fact, consumers only have a 1 in 5 chance of buying a product that contains what is stated on the label or one that does not harbor contaminates.
Pharmaceutical GMP compliant facilities adhere to the same stringent requirements as pharmaceutical drugs.
2. Select a SAM-e supplement that is enteric coated because this nutrient can be easily destroyed by stomach acids. Enteric coated protects the ingredients as they pass through the stomach acid juices and into the small intestine, where the coating dissolves and the ingredients are absorbed to nourish your cells and organs.
