    What are the Foods with Zinc?

    The best food sources of zinc include: meat, liver, seafood (especially oysters), wheat germ, brewer's yeast, pumpkin seeds, eggs, ground mustard, and nonfat dry milk.

    Zinc is also found in fish, dulse, kelp, lamb, legumes, lima beans, pecans, sardines, soybeans, sunflower seeds, whole grains, soy lecithin, torula yeast, mushrooms, and poultry.

    Although there are many food sources that contain zinc, some experts are concern on the amounts because it is lost in processing, or never exists in substantial amounts due to nutrient-poor soil.



    Who would Benefit from Additional Zinc and/or Zinc Supplements?

    According to the well renowned tome "New Encyclopedia Vitamins, Minerals, Supplements, & Herbs" written by Nicola Reavley who states:

    "Results of the Second National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, published in 1995, suggest that zinc intakes are declining. This is likely to be due to lower meat and higher cereal consumption, food processing methods which reduce zinc content of food and lower soil concentrations of zinc." (page 314.)

    As such, everyone should keep a close watch on their daily intake of this essential mineral. The recommended daily allowance (RDA) for zinc is 15 mg for adult men and 12 mg for adult women. Nowadays, most physicians recommend, at the very least, a high-quality multi-vitamin and mineral supplement daily. Put simply, zinc is available in high quality multivitamin and mineral supplements.

    In addition, the following individuals may need additional amounts of zinc and/or may benefit from zinc supplements:

    Precautions of Zinc and/or Zinc Supplements

    Indeed, taking too much of a good thing over a prolonged period of time is often not wise. For example, high doses of zinc and/or zinc supplements (more than 100 mgs daily) over a prolonged period of time may actually impair rather than enhance immune function.

    Phytates, which are compounds found in grains and legumes is actually an enemy of zinc. Phytates bind with zinc so that it cannot be absorbed.

    Zinc can interfere with copper absorption and, as such, experts recommend that both should be taken together.

    It is advised that if you're taking both iron and zinc supplements that they are consumed at different times because the two minerals interfere with each other’s activity.

    It's important that you speak to a physician before taking any zinc supplements.

    Tips on Choosing a Zinc Supplement
